ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will run in Israel’s next election, his right-wing Likud party said Wednesday. In a brief statement, Likud said Netanyahu would “run in the upcoming elections”, without elaborating.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump told ABC News that it was unclear whether Netanyahu planned to run again, according to a Tuesday report from the outlet. Elections have not yet been officially announced, but they are required under Israeli law to take place by October.

To strengthen his political position ahead of the vote, Netanyahu’s Likud party has formed a strategic alliance and signed a combined ticket merger with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope party. The upcoming vote carries immense national weight as it will serve as the first general election held in Israel since the 7 October 2023 attacks. Despite cementing his party leadership, Netanyahu faces a challenging political landscape, with recent national polls showing that a majority of the Israeli public opposes his bid for another term.
