YANGON Region Minister for Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport Dr Myo Thaw has stated that effective action will be taken in accordance with the Telecommunications Law and related regulations against Wi-Fi internet service providers operating in Yangon without complying with established rules and procedures.

He said inspection teams are conducting field checks and removing unauthorized cables installed by such companies from electricity poles.

The minister made the remarks on 9 June during the first day of the Third Regular Session of the Second Yangon Region Hluttaw. He was responding to a starred question raised by U Min Thein Tun, Hluttaw representative for Mayangon Township, regarding measures to organize the large number of overhead Wi-Fi cables and whether action would be taken against companies installing cables without proper authorization. Relevant internet service providers and the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) are currently working together to organize the numerous cables suspended along major roads in Yangon.

The work includes removing illegally installed cables, cutting and clearing disused cables, raising cables that are hanging too low, and repairing or replacing damaged utility poles. It is being closely monitored whether companies are complying with the directives of the Digital Development and Communications Department. The Yangon Region government and relevant government agencies will continue to cooperate in carrying out measures to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure is consistent with the city’s urban landscape and development plans.
