THE Japanese government and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Tuesday that they have launched a new cooperation plan aimed at strengthening economic security and advancing trustworthy artificial intelligence governance amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed hope in a meeting with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann at her office that Japan and the OECD will work together to lead discussions in the international community based on the plan, the Foreign Ministry said.
The cooperation plan is intended to “strengthen a rulesbased international economic order” while promoting sustainable growth and fair competition. It also aligns with the free and open Indo-Pacific vision promoted by Japan.
Cormann called Japan a highly important and trusted partner, adding that he looks forward to advancing the plan together, according to the ministry.
The plan places a strong emphasis on supply chain resilience in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, AI and quantum technology.
Japan and the Paris-based organization said they will expand analysis of vulnerabilities linked to critical minerals and advanced technologies while enhancing tools that monitor trade flows, supply chain dependencies and export restrictions. — Kyodo
