A week-long awareness campaign titled “Proper Use of Pedestrian Crossings, Underpasses, and Overpasses in Pursuit of Traffic Rules” is currently being held in high-traffic areas across Yangon, according to the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC). This initiative follows the President’s guidance to ensure Yangon residents travel systematically and adhere to traffic regulations.

“The Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Management Law and its rules explicitly state that pedestrians must use the provided zebra crossings, underpasses, or overpasses. We are conducting this campaign to urge the public to cross only at designated spots. Failure to comply can result in a fine not exceeding K30,000 under the existing law,” said U Lian Cin Mang. The campaign began on 7 May at busy landmarks such as Sule, Mahamyaing, and Pyay Road. Officials are distributing educational pamphlets on road safety and guiding pedestrians on how to cross the streets systematically.

These activities will continue at various pedestrian crossings throughout the city. He further noted that once the one-week educational period concludes, legal action will be taken against those who fail to follow the rules.

Safety guidelines include: Walking on the left side facing oncoming traffic in areas without sidewalks; pedestrians should use traffic facilities and look left, look right, and look left again to ensure the road is clear before crossing; prohibiting the use of mobile phones and earphones while crossing.
