TO transform Myanmar zoos into international conservation zoos and enrich animals’ quality of life, a three-day workshop called Animal Behaviour and Enrichment has been in progress at the Yangon Zoo.
Organized by Htoo Zoos and Garden Business Unit, the 8th Animal Behaviour and Enrichment Workshop has been ongoing from 28 to 30 April at the Yangon Zoo, and experts from Thailand Khao Kheow Open Zoo and international organizations have given lectures.
At the workshop, about 38 trainees, including officials from the Department of Forest, zoo administrators, veterinarians, zoo keepers and staff, have joined. The workshop aims to change zoos in Myanmar into international conservation zoos and understand the natural behaviours of animals for the enrichment of their quality of life, said the Yangon Zoo.
In particular, the workshop is designed to provide enrichment techniques which support the mental and physical growth of animals, creating natural habitats and sharing knowledge about stress release, it said. Organizing such workshops supports Myanmar zoos to meet animal welfare norms set by the South-East Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association (SEAZA).
The Animals Welfare Auditory Team, comprising international experts, will come to Myanmar in August and visit each zoo to conduct thorough inspections, verifying compliance with SEAZA norms and ensuring the humane treatment of captive animals.
