THE low-pressure area formed over the South Bay of Bengal may lead to heavy rain in southern Myanmar; there is no possibility of high rainfall or a cold wave, said meteorologist U Win Naing.
The upper air cyclonic circulation (UACC) in the South Bay of Bengal near the equator led to the formation of a low-pressure area on 16 February and moved west-northwestwards, with the possibility of developing into a stronger, more marked low-pressure area on 18 February, he said.
Due to these conditions, it will rain in Tanintharyi Region and Mon State in seven days from 17 to 23 February, but the rainfall will not exceed 1inch while it will rain showering in southern Shan State, eastern Bago Region and Kayin State and mostly dry in the Central Myanmar- Mandalay, Magway, Sagaing and western Rakhine State and Chin State, he said. The formation of clouds has increased in the Indian Ocean, and so has the possibility of rain along the equator.
He said OLR values are between 230 and 250, so the chance of rain is still low for South-East Asia/Indochina Peninsula, which includes Myanmar.
The slight impact of La Nina remains until March 2026, and the temperature at night and early mornings is low as of January this year, except for it; there is no possibility of a cold wave, he said.
