During the 2025-2026 financial year, nearly 15,000 houses in eight regions and states will be strengthened and renovated under the strong winds mitigation programme at a cost of approximately K1.1 billion, according to the Disaster Management Department under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
The strengthening and renovation works will be implemented in Taninthayi Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Mon State, Yangon Region, Shan State and Ayeyawady Region. Priority will be given to houses most vulnerable to windstorm damage in each locality.
From the 2016-2017 financial year to the 2024-2025 financial year, more than 86,000 houses have already been reinforced to withstand strong winds hazards using over Ks 34.5 billion from state funds. In order to reduce losses caused by seasonal disasters, the Disaster Management Department is continuing to carry out public awareness activities, including the dissemination of do’s and don’ts, educational programmes, the distribution of pamphlets, and awareness-raising campaigns.
