A total of K22 billion will be utilized on the rural electrification project in the current financial year 2025-2026, aiming to cover over 30,000 households in remote areas where the national grid is hard to reach, according to an official of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development

This rural electrification project is carried out with a small-scale solar system for a single house and a mini-grid system. Small-scale solar systems for a single home will reach rural communities in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Yangon Region, Ayeyawady Region, eastern and southern Shan State, as it is the only viable common solution for electrifying remote areas in Myanmar. The project scales up mini-grid sites to provide reliable, affordable and clean energy in remote areas in Ayeyawady and Tanintharyi regions.

“Small-scale solar system for a single house has been planned for 28,076 households in 339 villages in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, Yangon, and Ayeyawady regions and southern and eastern Shan State. Mini-grids will reach 10 villages in Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions, extending the electrification project to 2,154 households, said an official of the ministry.

Rural electrification projects also spent K22 billion in the 2024-2025 FY. The Ministry of Electric Power reported a total electricity generation of 59,218.9 MWh on 26 July 2025 and 56,829.3 MWh on 27 July 2025.
