Efforts are being exerted to designate areas inside walls and outside moats in the ancient Ketumati City in Toungoo Township, Bago Region, as a cultural heritage property area.
Eleven (1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19) out of 23 wards in Toungoo are included in the expansion of designated cultural heritage areas by using precise GPS mapping, with the inclusion of eastern, western, and southern walls.
“Conservation activities have intensified since last year. At present, site designation within the ward is ongoing. Conservation efforts began in 1990. Squatting and encroachment around western, northern and southern walls have cleared, and the walls need further conservation,” Dr Mya Thaung, an advisor to the Department of Archaeology and National Museums.
