Authorities have deported 128 foreign nationals linked to telecom fraud cases, transferring them to their respective countries through the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II, with 14 foreign nationals apprehended for further investigation.

The deported individuals had illegally entered Myanmar via border routes, mainly through neighbouring countries, including Thailand. They were discovered operating online gambling and telecom fraud schemes in KK Park, Maetawthalay, and Kyaukkhat areas of Myawady Township, Kayin State. The deportees include 55 Chinese Taipei, 41 Ethiopians, 15 Sri Lankans, 12 Nepalese and five Sierra Leonean nationals.

The deportation process was conducted in line with international humanitarian principles and intergovernmental friendship, adhering to legal procedures. Kayin State Minister for Social Affairs U Saw Tun Aung and relevant officials oversaw the operation, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of documentation.

A formal handover event was held, attended by Myanmar officials and foreign diplomatic representatives, including the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand Ms EAS Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Deputy Ambassador of Sierra Leone Mr Saffa–Woya Rogers, Nepal’s First Secretary Mr Kumar Bikram Regmi, Ethiopia’s Second Secretary Mr Wendwosen Melkamu, and Deputy Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Mr Asad Cheng.

Also, 14 more Chinese nationals were apprehended in Myawady’s KK Park area yesterday for illegal entry and suspected involvement in online fraud. From 30 January to 6 May 2025, Myanmar authorities detained a total of 9,059 foreigners for illegal entry, with 7,713 already deported via Thailand. The remaining 1,346 are awaiting deportation and are currently under proper custody.

The Myanmar government is taking firm action against individuals involved in online scams and gambling. Investigations are ongoing in cooperation with international organizations, particularly under the trilateral partnership between Myanmar, China and Thailand to dismantle such cross-border criminal networks.
