The Government is under the arrangement to support pregnant mothers and their children under two years old, said State Administration Council Vice-Chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win.

He made the remarks at a meeting of the National Committee on Social Protection held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw on 24 February.

The beneficiaries of the financial assistance programme for pregnant mothers and children under two years old will be supported through Myanmar Economic Bank branches in the 2024-2025 financial year.

Officials need to ensure that no child is left behind in this support programme and measures must be taken now to further implement social protection work, the Vice-Senior General said. Moreover, it is currently providing support through State funds, and it is necessary to prepare in advance for increased support in the future, while the employers should consider providing support to their employees in various ways, he elaborated.

Every country has social protection programmes, and the percentage of social protection expenditure in GDP globally is 12.9 per cent, while the percentage of social protection expenditure in GDP in low-income countries is 1.1 per cent. As the support percentages vary based on a country’s GDP, he urged relevant officials to study the support percentages of other countries to adopt it in Myanmar.
