Visit of Ambassador of India to Sittwe on 16-17 January 2025

Ambassador Abhay Thakur, accompanied by Shri Sunil Mukundan, Managing Director, India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) as well as officials of the Embassy of India, Yangon and the Consulate General of India, Sittwe, visited Sittwe, Rakhine State on 16-17 January 2025.

Ambassador visited the Sittwe Port of the GOI-assisted Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Corridor (KMMTTC) Project and reviewed its ongoing operations together with officials from the India Ports Global Limited (IPGL), the port operator. Since its inauguration in May 2023, the Sittwe Port has handled more than 150 vessels, carrying cargoes of food, agriculture commodities, medicines, fuel, vehicles, construction material, machinery, equipment, etc.

During his visit, Ambassador also met the Chief Minister of Rakhine State U Htein Lin and discussed matters related to bilateral development cooperation projects as well as capacity building and humanitarian assistance under the bilateral Rakhine State Development Program, in line with local needs and priorities, to the benefit of the people of Rakhine.

Both sides agreed that in the years ahead, the Sittwe Port, an India-Myanmar Friendship Project, will help strengthen coastal, regional and international connectivity, as well as enhance travel and tourism, particularly in the context of the age-old civilizational and people-to-people connect between the two countries. Ambassador emphasized the importance of early return to peace and stability, that would pave the way for exploiting the full potential of the KMMTTC project.

Ambassador visited the Sri Sri Moha Dev Bari Temple, where he interacted with members of the Indian origin community. He informed them of our consular services for PIOs, and support for strengthening their links with India. Ambassador also visited the premises of the Consulate General of India, Sittwe.
