ON 2 October, the 155th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at the India Centre in collaboration with the U Ne Oke Foundation. The event focused on Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence, truth, and justice, which continue to inspire generations and show the path to true liberation through dialogue, social reform, and uplifting people with low incomes with dignity.
Indian Ambassador Abhay Thakur spoke about the strong bilateral relations between Myanmar and India, emphasising the lasting influence of Gandhi’s principles. Scholars also contributed by discussing excerpts from Gandhi’s speeches, and cultural performances were showcased during the event.
U Nay Oke, U Hein Latt, and Dr Tin Maung Htwe, who have written about Mahatma Gandhi, also delivered speeches. They highlighted the shared cultural values between India and Myanmar, particularly the warm care within family life. They stressed the ongoing relevance of Gandhi’s messages in addressing modern societal issues through dialogue and cooperation.
Students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre performed music and cultural displays, further enhancing the spirit of the occasion. Gandhi’s teachings on compassion, understanding, and justice were a central theme, reflecting a collective resolve to build a peaceful and harmonious future for both nations.
The event was attended by 125 guests, including representatives from political parties, think tanks, charities, and the Indian community.
