Six innocent civilians, including two children aged four and nine, were killed when members of the KNLA and PDF terrorists launched an unprovoked heavy weapon attack on Kawkbaw Village in Kyondoe, Kawkareik Township, Kayin State, according to reports.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 pm on 12 June, when the insurgents fired heavy weapons from a location approximately 2,700 metres northeast of Kawkbaw Village. Artillery shells landed and exploded inside the village, instantly killing three civilians, including a four-year-old child. Three more villagers, including a nine-year-old child, sustained critical injuries from shrapnel.
These three injured victims were transported to Hpa-an General Hospital for medical treatment, however tragically succumbed to their wounds on the way, bringing the death toll to six.
Reports indicate that such indiscriminate attacks by insurgents are frequently targeted at towns, villages and communities that do not support their violent campaigns. As a result, civilian casualties continue to rise. Local communities have condemned the attacks, and security personnel are reportedly working with residents to implement necessary security measures in the area.
