YANGON General Hospital has made comprehensive preparations to treat over 100 patients simultaneously in the event of natural disasters or large-scale casualty incidents, according to Dr Aung Lin Aye, the hospital’s medical superintendent.
In line with the Ministry of Health’s guidance and the directives of the Department of Medical Services, the hospital has developed a Mass Casualty Management Plan (2025). This plan aims to ensure that emergency healthcare services are delivered in an organized and efficient manner during crises.
“Our goal is to enable Yangon General Hospital to respond quickly and effectively to save lives during natural disasters or other mass casualty events while maintaining uninterrupted care for other patients,” said Dr Aung Lin Aye.
The hospital has established specific criteria for classifying emergencies. If ten or more injured patients arrive at the same time, the situation will be declared an emergency. When the number of casualties reaches 30, the Emergency Department will lead the response. If the number rises to between 30 and 100 patients, the entire hospital will be mobilized. Should the figure exceed 100, coordination with other hospitals will be activated.
In such emergencies, a Command-and-Control Centre will be set up immediately to oversee operations. Under its supervision, six task teams and six support teams will be systematically organized to manage the situation effectively.
The task teams will comprise groups responsible for hospital security, medical treatment, emergency logistics, interdepartmental coordination, media communication, and social engagement. The support teams will include specialists from the Radiology Department, Pathology Department, Forensic Medicine, Blood Donation Bank, Blood Distribution, and the Medical Store.
