The Ministry of Commerce initiated a special programme allowing Myanmar citizens working abroad to import electric vehicles (EVs) and e-bikes if they send back part of their earnings to Myanmar through official financial institutions.

When Myanmar citizens including seafarers transfer their foreign salaries or earnings to the domestic banks, they are entitled to import one EV whose value is equivalent to five per cent of the inward remittance per year.

This import policy is to enhance EV adoption and boost sales for environmental sustainability.

“If Myanmar workers including seafarers remit over US$50,000 per year, they were allowed to import one electric vehicle or one electric motorcycle which is equivalent to five per cent of the remittance. If an individual’s remittance does not meet the amount of the EV or electric motorcycle, they can import them collectively,” said an official of the ministry.
There are a total of 19 EV charging stations across three big cities, including four in Nay Pyi Taw, and five each in Yangon, Mandalay, and Yangon-Mandalay Expressway.
