A meeting between the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) (AM) was held yesterday morning at the meeting hall of the Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw, following the NSCN-K (AM)’s expressed desire to participate in discussions on national unity and peacebuilding.

During the meeting, Union Minister for Defence NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae noted that the NSCN-K had previously signed a bilateral ceasefire agreement and that earlier discussions had covered local development, education, healthcare, and transport infrastructure, while inviting the Naga group to present its development needs for the government’s consideration and encouraging open discussions on challenges to cooperation in ensuring regional peace and stability.

U Ann Mai, Chairman of the NSCN-K (AM), expressed gratitude for the invitation to the peace talks, described the political dialogue as an important historical milestone for achieving sustainable peace, and emphasized his commitment to cooperation to ensure the region kept pace with other areas in education, healthcare, transport infrastructure, and economic development while improving the socioeconomic well-being of the local population.

During the general discussions, participants addressed several issues, including the possible submission of a proposal to Hluttaw, in accordance with the 2008 Constitution, to incorporate additional townships into the Naga Self-Administered Zone, negotiations on political aspirations to achieve lasting peace in line with the government’s four policies, the upgrading of villages and village tracts in the Naga Self-Administered Zone to towns in accordance with the rules and procedures of the relevant administrative bodies and departments, the identification of priority road sections to improve regional transport links, and coordination with relevant ministries to enable local students who meet the required qualifications to attend appropriate universities, colleges, and training institutes for studies in education and healthcare.

Subsequently, NSPNC Secretary Lt-Gen Min Naing discussed cooperation with the Tatmadaw and government departments in the region to promote security and regional development. He also emphasized the need for systematic supervision of armed group members on the ground to prevent actions that could undermine the peace process.

Both sides then agreed on the record of the discussions and signed the official meeting record to confirm its contents.

Following the discussions, NSCN-K (AM) Chairman U Ann Mai delivered a vote of thanks, and NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae delivered the closing remarks. Commemorative gifts were exchanged, and the meeting concluded. — MNA/TH
