Vice-President Nan Ni Ni Aye, who serves as Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the 27th Traditional Myanmar Cultural Performing Arts Competition 2026, watched a performance of the “Vidhura” Jataka drama – one of the Ten Great Birth Stories of the Buddha – held yesterday at the Open-Air Theatre of the Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee City Hall.

The competition performance was attended by Union ministers, the chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council, the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, senior Tatmadaw officers and their spouses, deputy ministers, members of the Nay Pyi Taw Council, departmental officials, panel judges, supervisors, trainers, competing teams from various states and regions, civil servants and their families, and art enthusiasts.

The Vice-President warmly greeted the veteran artistes serving as the judges’ panel for the Jataka Drama competition.

Afterwards, the Vice-President and other attendees enjoyed a performance of the Vidhura Jataka drama presented by the Mann Shwe Vidhura Jataka Drama Troupe, representing the Mandalay Region. The performers presented the scenes in sequence, incorporating the original dramatic script, singing, expressive crying, and captivating dialogue delivery. They followed the script closely, delivering their lines accurately while adhering to traditional Myanmar theatrical conventions and incorporating creative artistic elements.

The Vidhura Jataka is the ninth of the Ten Great Birth Stories of the Buddha. The drama is performed with the objectives of fostering an understanding of the benefits of wisdom grounded in moral purity and integrity, promoting the practice of the four virtues of Sadunara, highlighting the dangers and negative consequences of gambling to encourage avoidance, and encouraging viewers to cultivate righteousness and the Seven Noble Treasures while reflecting on the story.

The Vidhura Jataka Drama contest for the 27th Traditional Myanmar Cultural Performing Arts Competition 2026 featured a troupe representing Bago Region on 21 October, followed by a troupe representing Mandalay Region yesterday. Troupes representing Mon State, Sagaing Region, and Yangon Region will continue their performances according to their scheduled dates from 23 to 25 October. — MNA/TH
