Future Bagan is accelerating conservation efforts at ancient pagodas and temples in the Bagan ancient cultural zone to prevent deterioration and ensure the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage sites.
During 2026, the Future Bagan group has carried out conservation work at around 20 ancient pagodas in the Bagan area, including injecting chemicals to remove trees growing on the structures, filling gaps between ancient bricks to prevent rainwater from penetrating damaged areas caused by plant roots, and applying mortar where necessary.
The group has also undertaken additional measures to protect mural paintings inside the ancient temples. Metal grilles have been installed at entrances to prevent bats and birds from entering and damaging the murals. Roller blinds have also been fitted over windows and doors to control the amount of light entering the temples and reduce the fading of mural paintings.
“Future Bagan is a group formed by local residents and is registered as an association with the relevant ministry. We are working to preserve Bagan’s ancient cultural heritage as much as we can. We have to take special care to ensure that our work does not damage the heritage sites, and we report the completed work back to the relevant department,” said Ko Naing of Future Bagan.
“We cover the costs of tree removal, brick-gap filling, installation of metal grilles and other conservation work using the association’s own funds,” he added.
Future Bagan will continue carrying out conservation activities with local experts and volunteers, using its own funds, to ensure the long-term preservation of Bagan’s ancient cultural heritage, according to the group.
