MYANMAR targets to generate US$2 billion in revenue from rice and broken rice exports in 2028, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

“The ministry aims to increase annual rice export volume up to four to five million tonnes and targets around US$2 billion in revenue,” said Union Minister U Min Naung of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MALI). In order to achieve the five million tonne rice export target, approximately five million acres of Rice Export Zone would need to be developed, he added.

“The target might feel out of reach at once. This year, we have established 300,000 acres of Rice Export Zone,” he said. The ministry plans to continue expanding the Rice Export Zone until the targets are met, depending on annual progress and multi sectoral cooperation. The Myanmar Rice Federation is targeting three million tonnes of rice and broken rice exports in the 2026-2027 financial year. More than 840,000 tonnes had been shipped, generating US$291 million as of the end of August in the current FY beginning 1 April.
