The National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) and the negotiation team of the signatories to the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA-S EAOs) held a meeting yesterday morning at the meeting hall of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Centre in Yangon.
Speaking at the meeting, NSPNC Chairman Lt-Gen Yar Pyae stated that discussions would be held either group by group or individually to address the differing objectives and aspirations of EAOs regarding the peace process and return to initial conditions, while political parties representing the public would be treated not merely as dialogue partners but as collaborative partners, and everyone should strive to bring ethnic armed organizations that have not signed the NCA into the peace process and encourage open discussions on future peace initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the NCA-S EAOs, negotiation team leader and RCSS Secretary 1 Sao Sai Ngeng expressed his delight at learning that appropriate avenues would be pursued to meet and hold discussions with all ethnic armed organizations to enable them to join the peace process. He stated that the NCA-S EAOs would strive to resume the peace process and, most importantly, build mutual trust.
Subsequently, NSPNC Secretary Lt-Gen Min Naing explained the arrangements being made to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the NCA and hold a workshop, future peace processes to be pursued with the NCA-S EAO negotiation team, and matters concerning the formulation of specific agreements during the meetings.
Attendees then discussed modalities for continuing peace process discussions based on the essence of the NCA, topics for dialogue, the implementation of confidence-building measures, the safeguarding of fundamental principles in political talks, encouraging the further participation of ethnic armed organizations in the peace process, carrying out peace and development activities in areas where EAOs are based, holding public discussions and forums in regions and states, and matters related to future peace processes.
The first day of the meeting was then adjourned, with the second day of discussions scheduled to continue on 30 September, according to reports. — MNA/TH
