A large typhoon was moving towards eastern Japan’s Pacific coast Monday, bringing heavy rain that triggered landslides in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures near Tokyo and left one person injured, according to local governments.
In Sodegaura, Chiba, a woman in her 40s sustained minor injuries after driving into debris from a landslide. In Yokosuka, Kanagawa, rescue operations are underway for a female resident of a house struck by a landslide, with mud flowing inside.
The weather agency issued a top-level warning for landslides on its 5-point scale for the northern part of the Izu island chain and a level 4 warning for the rest of the chain, some areas in Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Ibaraki prefectures.
Eight houses in Chiba were damaged by the typhoon, including some that were submerged, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Typhoon Dujuan was projected to pass near the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, from Monday evening until late into the night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Downpours are occurring on Izu Oshima, the largest island in the Izu chain, located about 100 kilometres from Tokyo, as well as in the Kanto region, including Tokyo, and Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan. A top-level landslide warning has been issued for Izu Oshima.
In the city of Chiba, roads were flooded and two cars were driven into floodwaters and became submerged, but the drivers managed to get to safety and no one was injured, the local fire department said. — Kyodo
