UNION Minister for Electricity and Energy U Ko Ko Lwin stressed the need to accelerate the establishment of oil refineries, noting that refined fuel prices, which were previously only about 30 per cent higher than crude oil feedstock prices, have now risen to nearly two and a half times that level.
The Union minister made the remarks on 14 September while inspecting the step-by-step test operations of Phase I of the Thanlyin Refinery project, accompanied by responsible officials.
During the inspection, he said the current period was marked by global challenges and rising refined fuel prices, making it necessary to accelerate the establishment of oil refineries. While the country is strictly supervising fuel consumption, efforts are also being made to produce fuel domestically.
He also instructed officials to systematically and thoroughly train personnel, as the Thanlyin Refinery, which is set to begin operations, will be the first refinery of its kind in which control, monitoring and adjustments can be carried out directly from the control room. — TWA/TH
