EMERGENCY protection works are continuing at the Nyaungdonkyun embankment near Ganchaung Village in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Region, after severe riverbank erosion damaged the embankment.

The erosion occurred on the morning of 25 August between embankment mileposts 11/6 and 11/7 along the Toe River, affecting a section about 300 feet long and 45 feet wide.

To prevent further damage, a temporary diversion embankment is being built between mileposts 11/5 and 11/6, while porcupines are being installed for riverbank protection and other measures are being taken to prevent further erosion and collapse.

Tatmadaw personnel, Myanmar Police Force members, social organisations and residents are working together with heavy machinery to accelerate the emergency works. Officials from Yangon Command and relevant authorities also inspected the site and coordinated the necessary measures. — MNA/KZL
