THE death toll from catastrophic flash floods triggered along the Nepal-China border has risen to 538, with at least 977 people still missing, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported Friday.
The disaster began Wednesday following a massive deluge along the Tibet-Nepal border that sent torrents of water, mud, and boulders coursing through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems. Search teams have recovered bodies across multiple districts, with Chitwan recording the highest toll at 221, followed by Nawalparasi East with 134. Among the missing are 517 foreign nationals, dozens of security personnel, and local civil servants. At least 73 people have been injured.
Fears of secondary flooding intensified Friday after a barrier lake formed near the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo confluence reportedly breached, prompting emergency teams to accelerate evacuations. In response, Nepalese authorities mobilized 14,821 personnel from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and civil police. Rescue teams have safely evacuated 3,742 individuals, supported by 78 military and private helicopter sorties delivering food, medical supplies, and satellite communication gear. — AGENCIES
