A total of 5,399 YBS buses are registered at the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC); however, only 3,400 buses are available for public transport at present, said Col Win Tint, Yangon Region Security and Border Affairs Minister.
He replied to the question about the import of new buses and car spare parts in Yangon, raised by regional Hluttaw MP U Min Thein Tun from Mayangon Township Constituency 1 in the regional Hluttaw meeting held on 28 August. Yangon’s bus network serves about 1.8 million commuters daily with roughly 3,400 buses across 133 lines operated by 21 companies. But the fleet is thinning.
The minister explained that the decline stems from ageing vehicles, scarce and costly spare parts, and mounting maintenance needs. Currently, about 3,100 CNG buses and 300 diesel buses remain in service.
While repairs are planned for buses requiring maintenance, no new purchases are on the horizon, he added. — TWA/ZS
