FS Italiane Group said Friday its Trenitalia railway operating unit will launch high-speed rail services between Paris and London in 2029 and has ordered trains from a Hitachi Ltd subsidiary with a plan to invest two billion euro ($2.3 billion).
Hitachi Rail Ltd will deliver 19 high-speed trains as the Italian railway group aims to expand its operations in France.
Eurostar has long dominated high-speed rail services connecting Britain and continental Europe, but other companies are seeking to challenge its dominance.
Trenitalia has already entered the high-speed rail market in France following the deregulation of the sector, operating train services connecting Paris separately with Lyon and Marseille in southern France, as well as Milan in northern Italy. — Kyodo
