MORE than 180,000 domestic and international visitors toured the Bagan Archaeological Zone between January and July, with Chinese tourists accounting for the largest proportion of foreign arrivals, according to the Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture.
The ministry said that domestic travellers accounted for the majority of visitors during the seven months, while international arrivals remained comparatively low.
Visitor numbers were highest during the first four months of the year before declining in June and July, the rainy season, when travel activity typically slows.
Foreign tourists were particularly drawn to Bagan’s ancient temples, distinctive architecture, mural paintings, sand paintings and traditional lacquerware industry. — ASH/KZL
