A potential agreement between Iran and Oman on arrangements for vessels’ passage through the Strait of Hormuz would not mean the immediate reopening of the waterway, Iran’s staterun IRIB TV reported on Wednesday. The negotiations on the arrangements are solely between Iran and Oman and have no connection to the United States, IRIB TV quoted an informed source as saying.
The source said that even if Iran and Oman reach an agreement, the strait will remain closed as long as the United States continues its “violations”, adding that the waterway’s reopening hinges on “the US changing its behavior and rectifying its violations.” Also on Wednesday, Sepah News, the official news outlet of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, quoted an informed official as saying that US “interventions” and President Donald Trump’s threats are the main reasons for the delay in reaching an agreement between Tehran and Muscat on the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Tuesday described the ongoing talks between Iran and Oman on designating safe routes through the strait as “positive”.
