JAPAN and Mexico agreed to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector during talks between their foreign ministers in Mexico City on Monday, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said, as Tokyo seeks to bolster its energy security amid tensions in the Middle East.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco also agreed to convene the inaugural meeting of a high-level economic dialogue between the two countries within the current fiscal year.
Japan has previously imported Mexican crude as an alternative to Middle Eastern oil because of its similar composition, part of Tokyo’s broader effort to diversify energy supplies in response to geopolitical risks.
According to the ministry, Velasco said Mexico, which hosts about 1,600 Japanese business operations, will work to deepen bilateral economic ties. He also expressed condolences and solidarity on behalf of the Mexican government and people over the recent magnitude-7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture.
