THE Myanmar Poultry Farmers and Dealers Association, under the Myanmar Livestock Federation, is selling eggs directly to consumers at affordable prices to help curb rising prices.
The Egg and Duck Egg Distributors Group has launched a programme to sell eggs directly to consumers under the slogan “Clean, Fresh, Affordable Daily Nutrition” at markets managed under the Yangon City Development Committee on a rotation basis, starting from the morning of 20 July.
Eggs are a nutrient-dense food, rich in protein, and reasonably priced. Livestock farms are continuously producing these eggs for the market.
Vaccine shortages and feed raw material inputs elevate production costs for livestock products. There was a mismatch between layer chick production and demand in the previous years. Disease outbreaks in recent months, coupled with increased demand for eggs during the school season, have widened the gap between supply and demand, triggering price fluctuations in the retail market. The MLF and its member associations and groups are working not only to ensure a steady supply of eggs from layer farms but also to prioritize affordability for consumers. Therefore, they initiated this program to sell eggs directly from farms to consumers.
Eggs will be sold at K550 per egg on the morning of 22 July at the Padamya Market in Shwepyitha Township, Nandawun Market in South Okkalapa Township, Pazundaung Market in Pazundaung Township, Yadana Theingyi Market in North Okkalapa Township, Sanpya Market in Thingangyun Township, Dagon Shwe Pyi Market in Dagon Myothit (North) Township, Tamway Taxfree Market in Tamway Township, Bogale Market in Botahtaung Township and Htaukkyant Market near Htaukkyant Junction.
While implementing this programme to benefit consumers, the authorities will also take special care to ensure continued poultry production without disruption and avoid losses for layer farmers. — NN/KK
