UNICEF Myanmar has issued flood preparedness guidance to help people respond quickly and reduce the risk of injury, death and property damage caused by sudden flooding.
The agency stressed that floods can have a particularly severe impact on children and families, and urged the public to understand what to do before, during and after a flood.
UNICEF recommended preparing a family emergency plan, keeping an emergency bag with essential supplies, and storing important documents in waterproof containers. Families should evacuate immediately to higher ground when instructed by authorities, keep children away from floodwaters, and provide emotional support to children after the emergency.
It also warned that floodwaters may be deeper, faster-flowing and more contaminated than they appear, urging people to monitor reliable weather forecasts and follow official instructions.
