RESCUE teams are searching for a missing fisherman following a head-on collision between two vessels in the Twantay Canal, Twantay Township, Yangon Region, which resulted in the sinking of one of the boats. According to the Township Fire Services Department, the accident occurred near the 20-mile marker of the canal.

The incident took place after 9:30 pm on 4 July, involving a wooden-hulled vessel named “Zaw Myint Myat” and an iron-hulled rice-transporting ship. The collision caused severe damage to the “Zaw Myint Myat”, leading to its sinking.

“A wooden boat and an iron boat collided head-on. The wooden boat sank. One fisherman from the sunken boat is missing. We have been searching since last night but have not found him yet. Currently, the strong currents are making it difficult to continue the search,” the Twantay Township Fire Services Department head said.

There was a total of 32 people on board the boat: nine male workers, nine male passengers, and 15 female passengers. While 31 individuals were successfully rescued, one fisherman remains missing.

These incidents frequently happened in the region, and most recently, on the night of 28 May, three people went missing after a boat capsized in the Yangon River. — TWA/ZN
