authorities destroyed large quantities of seized narcotics and precursor chemicals in ceremonies held in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi marking the 39th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking yesterday.
The destroyed narcotics included 23 kinds of drugs and eight precursor chemicals worth K1,176 billion (over US$321 million) in Yangon, whereas 27 kinds worth K416 billion (more than US$113 million) in Mandalay, and 93 kinds worth K617 billion (over US$168 million) in Taunggyi.
This year, the narcotic drugs and precursors seized nationwide, worth about K2,210 billion ($603 million), were destroyed during the events.
The destroyed narcotic drugs and precursors included heroin, opium, stimulant tablets, methamphetamine, cannabis, ketamine, speciose, happy water and ecstasy, among others, seized in Shan State, Kayah State, Yangon Region, Ayeyawady Region, Bago Region, Taninthayi Region, Mon State, Kayin State and Rakhine State.
In pursuit of guidance of the President, Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force, Customs Department and Drug Enforcement Division accelerated the measures to combat drug abuse.
Between 1 June 2025 and 31 May 2026, drugs and precursor chemicals worth about K2,210 billion were seized in the country, according to the MPF.
