Of the country’s annual power generation, about 18.38 per cent or about 3,559 million units of electricity, has been lost, said the Ministry of Electricity and Energy on 11 June, and it also urged the public to report electricity theft.
Due to the high number of power thefts, adequate power transmission and distribution can’t be provided, and the income of the government and the public has been lost on a daily basis, it said.
To reduce losses, the ministry will heighten the implementation of technology upgrades in accordance with international standards, regular maintenance for power lines and transformers, smart meter installation and the use of a real-time monitoring system on power usage.
The ministry has also urged the public to stop stealing electricity and cooperate in tackling energy theft practices.
