Yangon General Hospital is set to enhance its medical services by installing a new SPECT-CT scanner this year, enabling more effective treatment capabilities for patients.

Currently, the Nuclear Medicine Department provides diagnostic and treatment services using radioactive isotopes for conditions related to the thyroid, bones, kidneys, parathyroid, liver, spleen, biliary tract, and gastrointestinal tract. It also conducts progressive diagnostic tests for cancer patients. The department primarily utilizes two advanced machines – the SPECT-CT and PET-CT scanners.

The SPECT-CT scanner is used to diagnose diseases of the bones, kidneys, thyroid, parathyroid, and liver, while the PET-CT scanner is the main tool used for cancer diagnostics. The radioactive isotopes used in these procedures are produced in-house by the Cyclotron facility located at the YGH.

Outpatient and inpatient care are provided twice daily (morning and afternoon) on all working days. During 2025, the department treated 3,000 patients using the SPECT-CT, 650 patients using the PET-CT, and 750 patients using radioactive isotope therapy.
In 2026, the hospital aims to further expand its diagnostic capacity by installing an additional SPECT-CT scanner. Beyond clinical services, the department also provides training to specialists in nuclear medicine, annually mentoring three to five postgraduate students.
