Major renovation works on staff housing in Nay Pyi Taw that was damaged by the powerful Mandalay earthquake are being carried out with efforts to complete them before the upcoming rainy season, according to Chairman U Shein Win of the Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Federation (MCEF).
The powerful Mandalay earthquake, which struck on 28 March 2025, caused damage to residential houses, religious buildings, staff housing and ministry offices in some regions and states, including the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area.
“In Nay Pyi Taw, all staff members were left without accommodation. When everyone had to rent houses outside, the rental fees were equivalent to an entire month’s salary. Understanding these difficulties, the federation has already completed repairs on 215 buildings classified under the blue level and 210 buildings under the orange level. Repairs are still underway on 120 buildings classified under the red level. We are striving to complete all work within the next two or three months. In addition, 40 new buildings are also under construction,” said U Shein Win.
For the project to repair earthquake-damaged buildings, loans amounting to K40.15 billion have already been provided to 27 member companies undertaking repairs on orange-level buildings, while loans totalling K40.758 billion have been issued to 28 member companies carrying out repairs on blue-level buildings. — ASH/MKKS
