Brokers have cheated Myanmar migrant workers on overseas worker identification cards (OWIC), labour affairs activists told The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).

The Ministry of Labour has officially made public information on how to apply for OWIC; however, brokers have taken advantage of people who are weak in acquiring informed knowledge.

“For example, they don’t know where they can apply OWIC. The government has already clarified it. But they don’t know how to do it, so brokers ask them for K800,000 or K1 million by saying they would help seek OWIC. People think it is real, but the card is fake,” said a labour affair activist.

Some people were denied going abroad as their OWICs were identified as counterfeit at the airport.

“Housemaids who try to go abroad unofficially are often cheated. So I would like to suggest they follow the government’s rules and try to go abroad officially. If not, fake documents may be verified,” he added.
