As part of preserving the ancient Bagan cultural heritage, the removal of plants growing on pagodas and temples has been carried out on a regular basis, according to the Bagan Heritage Trust.

Priority is given to pagodas and temples which are of cultural and historical importance. The BHT has collaborated with the Archaeology and National Museum Department in Bagan in the implementation of this project, and they cleared plants growing on the East Phetleik Temple and the West Phetleik Temple, where votive tablets carved 550 Buddhist stories (Jataka tales) are present, located at Thiri Pyitsaya ward on 25 April.

From 26 July to 11 August 2025, more than 290 plants, including bayans, were killed with chemical solutions, on pagodas No 1969, No 1152, No 1468 and No 1469.
