THE theme for World Intellectual Property Day on 26 April 2026 is “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!” This theme highlights how intellectual property (patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights) drives innovation, technology, and creativity in sports, enhancing both performance and the fan experience. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) leads this initiative to show how creative ideas are converted into economic value, enhancing the sporting world.
WIPO stated that World Intellectual Property Day 2026 celebrates how creativity and innovation, backed by IP rights, keep the world of sports thriving, dynamic and accessible for everyone, everywhere. It focuses on how IP powers cutting-edge equipment, safer gear, and digital advancements in sports.
Ensuring intellectual property rights is a crucial factor in the socioeconomic development of human society. However, if the public does not value and respect the role of intellectual property laws, the objectives of those laws cannot be fully achieved. Disputes between creators and infringers, as well as legal proceedings, will continue to arise across various sectors. Therefore, it is an important matter for every country to widely implement awareness and educational initiatives on intellectual property laws.
In any field, if personal creative works are not protected by law, innovation and creativity will not develop. Only intellectual property laws can help maintain a balance of interests between creators and users. In line with the theme set for World Intellectual Property Day 2026, intellectual property innovation and sporting activities must be “ready, set, innovate,” and efforts should be made to strengthen intellectual property rights further by integrating both sectors.
In Myanmar, in order to effectively protect national development, the interests of the public, and creative works, four intellectual property laws were enacted in 2019: the Trademark Law, the Industrial Design Law, the Patent Law, and the Copyright Law. The Trademark Law, the Industrial Design Law, and the Copyright Law came into force in 2023, while the Patent Law came into force in 2024, and these are being implemented as special laws.
In fact, sports aren’t just about the game. Sports intersect with fashion, entertainment, media, health, gaming and consumer goods. IP, such as patents, designs, trademarks, and copyrights, incentivizes innovation and enables cross-industry connections with sport, sparking creativity, technological advancement and economic growth. It is necessary to consider that even when somebody is outside the stadium or off the court, sports and IP are part of their daily life. Hence, everyone has to follow IP rights so as to improve the sports sector.
