Engineering plays a vital role in improving human life and addressing global challenges. Intending to promote innovative engineering solutions, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and UNESCO jointly organized the 2026 World Engineering Day Summit under the theme “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization”. The summit was held on 4 March at the Balai Kartini Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The annual celebration highlights the importance of engineering in solving global issues and promoting sustainable development. Events associated with the summit emphasize smart technologies, digital transformation, and innovative solutions that can help societies overcome environmental, economic, and social challenges. Activities such as hackathons, professional networking sessions, and technical discussions were also organized to encourage collaboration among engineers and experts.
The advancement of engineering does not depend only on acquiring modern technology. Equally important is the development of skilled human resources capable of managing, maintaining, and improving these technologies. In this regard, experts suggest building a strategic “engineering human resource pyramid.” This approach integrates skills-based education with engineering disciplines to produce a balanced workforce. Engineers alone cannot sustain modern technological systems; technicians are also needed to maintain operations, while organizations must continuously upgrade the abilities of skilled workers to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

If such a human resource structure is successfully established and supported by strategic approaches that promote modern engineering disciplines, it can significantly enhance a country’s economic competitiveness. At the same time, it can accelerate industrial modernization and contribute to building a sustainable future. Modern engineering, therefore, serves as a pathway toward resilient, competitive, and inclusive development. Cooperation among governments, institutions, engineers, and other stakeholders is essential to achieve these goals.
Examples from Myanmar also demonstrate the value of engineering advancement. The construction of the Maravijaya Buddha Image, recognized as the world’s tallest seated marble Buddha statue, highlights the successful collaboration between civilian and military engineers in the country. Similarly, the recently-commissioned Myanmar-Korea Friendship (Dala) Bridge across the Yangon River reflects the engineering capabilities of both Myanmar and Korean experts.
Ultimately, technological progress is intended to improve the quality of human life. While societies strive to develop and adopt advanced technologies, it is equally important to ensure that such innovations are used for constructive purposes. Engineering achievements should contribute to peace, development, and the well-being of humanity rather than becoming tools of destruction. When guided by responsibility and cooperation, engineering innovations can become milestones of pride in human history and help create a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
