RTAD revises embossed number plate fees from 1 Jan 2026
The fee for embossed vehicle number plates, which was previously set at K9,000, has been revised to K40,000 with effect from 1 January.
Under the revised fee structure for embossed number plates, the charges have been set at K40,000 for motor vehicles and trawlargy, K7,000 for motorcycles, K10,000 for three-wheeled vehicles, and K20,000 for trailers. It is reported that these revised rates are now being collected accordingly.
According to the Road Transport Administration Department, the fees that had been charged for embossed vehicle number plates were based on rates set in 2020. As these rates were no longer in line with current market prices, the department has revised the fees to better reflect present economic conditions.
Departmental records further indicate that as of the end of December 2025, more than 646,000 passenger vehicles had been registered, along with over 33,000 trawlargy, more than 120,000 threewheeled vehicles, over 23,000 trailers, and more than 4.2 million motorcycles.
