The global media landscape faces significant challenges, marked by disinformation campaigns, declining trust, and economic struggles. World News Day (28 September) aims to highlight these issues, supported by numerous organizations including AFP. In 2022, UNESCO noted the “broken business model” of news media, with advertising revenue plummeting as tech giants like Google and Meta capture the majority of ad spend.
Public trust in media has eroded, with only 40 per cent of respondents expressing confidence in news sources. Young audiences increasingly turn to influencers and platforms like TikTok for information. Disinformation, exacerbated by AI, poses a growing threat, with partisan sites outnumbering traditional outlets in the US Countries like Brazil are cracking down on fake news, but solutions remain elusive.
Additionally, journalists face challenges in conflict zones like Gaza. In this environment, media organizations are exploring AI to enhance reporting efficiency, despite fears of job displacement. The crisis calls for robust regulation and new strategies to ensure reliable journalism.
