Heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in Pindaya and Ywangan townships in southern Shan State, which also caused fatalities, according to locals.

The authorities have issued a warning to residents to take special care, and search and rescue operations are being carried out, the humanitarian organizations said.

“For the time being, the bridge at Mai In village on Pyidaungsu Road in Yaksawk was closed. We recovered five bodies killed by a landslide in Kone Saung village, including children. Some are missing. We are still working on the rescue operation,” said a member of the relief association.

Flooding began at midnight on 27 July in Pindaya, triggered by landslides that covered hundreds of acres of farmland. Some villages in the northern Pindaya were also flooded, and the road to the ShweUMin Pagoda has been closed.

“Currently, the water from Pindaya can reach Yaksawk, so Yaksawk locals must prepare in advance”, he continued.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on 29 July based on measurements at 06:30 am, the Sittoung River in Toungoo and Madauk reached about two feet and 5.5 feet above the respective danger level, the Shwegyin River about three feet above the danger level in Shwegyin, the Thanlwin River about five feet above the danger level in Hpa-an, the Thaungyin River more than four feet above the danger level in Myawady, the Bilin River more than 1.5 feet above danger level in Bilin, and the Mae Sai creek more than two feet above the danger level in Tachilek.
