MIGRATORY birds, including 12 globally endangered species, have begun arriving at the Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary in Bago Region for the winter season.
Key threatened species spotted include the black-headed ibis, spotbilled pelican, sarus crane, woolly-necked stork, greater spotted eagle, and Baer’s pochard. Sanctuary officials noted unusual early arrivals, such as common teals and brown-headed gulls landing by late October. Over 900 migratory birds have joined the sanctuary’s resident population of more than 6,000 birds across 70 species
Conservationists are closely monitoring how this year’s Super El Niño and potential heatwaves might alter migration patterns across Myanmar’s key wetland habitats, including Moeyungyi, Inlay Lake, and Indawgyi Lake, which sit along both the Central Asian and East Asian–Australasian Flyways.
