Courtesy and good manners play an important role in determining the standing of both individuals and communities in society. Therefore, to foster the development of well-mannered and cultured human resources within Myanmar society, teachers at basic education schools teach students and young people the principles of moral conduct, ethics and civic responsibility from an early age.

To become a good and capable person, it is important to respect and follow the teachings of one’s religion and to genuinely observe moral principles. Only then can one develop a kind and noble heart, become more empathetic and compassionate towards others, and cultivate honesty and integrity. Good character is also essential to becoming a good and capable person. Teachers at basic education schools introduce the values of moral principles to schoolchildren and guide them through practical exercises and lessons so that they can understand and follow them.

To help young children become familiar with Myanmar’s culture from an early age, the Ministry of Education and UNICEF Myanmar are working together to distribute storybooks to children attending school-based preschools and teach them to understand the benefits of good manners and proper conduct. Only when children learn about the distinctive, remarkable and cherished aspects of Myanmar’s culture from an early age will they grow up to become guardians and preservers of that culture in the future.

For school-age children and young people who are out of school for various reasons, Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE) and Non-Formal Middle School Education programmes are being implemented. To foster patriotism, promote understanding of moral principles, and develop well-mannered and cultured human resources among students enrolled in the NFPE programme, these values are taught through illustrated cards at the first and second levels of the NFPE curriculum.

Therefore, to promote patriotism among students, beginning with kindergarten children, foster their understanding of moral principles, and develop well-mannered and cultured human resources more sustainably and effectively, the government has established the National Early Childhood Care and Development Committee, which aims to nurture KG children by formulating short- and longterm plans and continuously implementing these plans.

Only when people possess good moral character will they develop awareness that committing wrongdoing is shameful and something to be feared. This will help them become valuable and exemplary citizens who contribute to their own well-being and Myanmar society, as well as outstanding, capable and loyal leaders of the nation. In this way, Myanmar society and the nation will achieve development and progress, while good moral values will continue to flourish for generations to come.
