THE annual Thadingyut Floating Lantern Festival in Shwegyin Township, Bago Region, commenced its 175th edition on 27 October.
The opening ceremony of the festival was held on the morning of 27 October. The image of Shin Upagutta was enshrined on a Karaweik royal barge and carried along the Shwegyin Creek for public veneration.
“As per the tradition of the Shwegyin Floating Lantern Festival, teams from local wards and villages will participate. The event features rowing races and group dance competitions. In addition, dance troupes performing traditional paddle dances, traditional Kayin Don dances, and Shan ethnic dances will perform in organized groups,” said an official from the festival organizing committee.
Furthermore, festival attendees and committee members floated over 100,000 lotus flower-shaped oil lamps along the Shwegyin Creek as an offering, accompanied by fireworks displays.
During the festival days, around 500 vendor stalls have been set up alongside traditional Myanmar theatrical performance shows, music concerts, and children’s playgrounds.
