VIETNAMESE businesspeople are interested in investing in Myanmar’s coffee cultivation and production sector, according to U Thet Win, chairman of the Myanmar-Vietnam Friendship Association.
Vietnam ranks second globally in coffee cultivation and production, yielding about 1.7 million tonnes of coffee beans annually.
Vietnam’s strong coffee exports drive rising demand for coffee, while limited cultivation land is prompting interest in investing in Myanmar.
Myanmar produces only about 10,000 tonnes of coffee annually and still has ample land available for cultivation, according to the Myanmar Coffee Association. With global coffee consumption rising and major export markets available, the association is carrying out awareness programs to boost Myanmar’s coffee production. Myanmar cultivates only highland Arabica and lowland Robusta coffee varieties. Myanmar coffee beans are currently exported to 16 countries, including China, Thailand, the UAE, Japan and Qatar, and the industry aims to export nearly 5,000 tonnes this year. — ASH/KK
