I nsocieties, acts of democratic oppression have sometimes been committed knowingly, while others have occurred unintentionally and by accident. However, past incidents of democratic oppression have caused those who are earnestly working for the country to suffer losses, while also resulting in the loss of valuable time and national interests.

At any given time, the actions being taken may seem correct. In reality, however, the truth may vary depending on the time and circumstances. Apart from the Four Noble Truths taught by the Buddha, there are no actions or beliefs in this world that remain unchangingly correct. Therefore, all actions and undertakings must be carefully examined from every angle to ensure that they are free from democratic oppression.

The essence and practice of democracy in society are highly subtle and worthy of appreciation. Everyone can enjoy the benefits of democracy only when their actions and conduct do not adversely affect the interests of others. Freedom of speech, writing and expression is a highly cherished right among people in countries that practise democracy. An individual’s freedom to speak, write and express themselves should not be exercised in ways that harm not only another person but also the interests of their community and country.

Furthermore, the mindset of viewing those who are different from oneself as enemies is fundamentally opposed to democracy. People whose ideas, beliefs and objectives differ from one’s own should not be regarded as enemies. However, their views and undertakings must not deviate from the truth.

To prevent the recurrence of tragic events in human history and the histories of nations resulting from democratic oppression, we must reflect on our own actions and learn from our country’s past, then choose and follow the most appropriate path forward. In doing so, the paths taken by individuals and nations may differ because of their respective experiences and the challenges they face. Nevertheless, they must not deviate from the ultimate goal of establishing a democratic system.

Everyone, in every country, must act with magnanimity whenever they have the opportunity to do so, prioritizing the interests of their country and its people over their own personal interests and those of their political party. They must always bear in mind that everything they do is connected to the country’s history and continually reflect on their own actions. Selfless service, personal sacrifice and actions directed towards serving the interests of the nation will enable them to live with a clear conscience and peace of mind throughout their lives.
