THE Myanmar Thoracic Society Conference 2026 opened at Novotel Hotel in Yangon yesterday morning. The two-day conference, held on 10 and 11 October, carries the theme “Together for Better Lung Health”. At the opening ceremony, Union Minister for Health Dr Soe Win highlighted that respiratory diseases pose global health challenges and stressed the need to strengthen treatment capacity through international cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and experience.

He said master’s and doctoral programmes in thoracic medicine and surgery were being offered, with a total of 30 students currently enrolled. He also reaffirmed continued efforts to strengthen the national health system to provide effective healthcare services that meet public needs, while supporting the development of advanced medical equipment and the capacity of medical professionals.

The Union minister also called for greater medical research, academic exchanges and collaboration among medical professionals to address healthcare challenges.

Myanmar Thoracic Society President Professor Dr Htet Myat delivered the opening remarks. The Union minister, the Yangon Region Minister for Social Affairs and the society’s president then formally opened the conference by cutting a ribbon and viewed academic poster displays and medical exhibitions.

The conference brings together international and Myanmar specialists in respiratory medicine and thoracic surgery, as well as young medical professionals. Doctors from Singapore, India, Bangladesh and Thailand are also attending. Participants will discuss advances in thoracic medicine, practical clinical experiences, and improvements in diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

A pre-conference workshop was held on 9 October at the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the 500-bed Speciality Hospital in Yangon, where 50 trainees received theoretical and practical training.

Such medical conferences help strengthen international cooperation and promote the exchange of clinical experience and research among medical professionals, contributing to improved professional capacity and the quality and effectiveness of respiratory healthcare services.
